IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Topic: Some people think that people are happiest as teenagers, but others think that people are happier as adults. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Happiness is something that everyone wants to achieve. Some feel that people are generally happier in their teenage years, while others think the happiest stage of life is adulthood. I personally side with the latter point of view.
There are several factors that manifest teenagerhood as the happiest period. Firstly, at this age, people usually have plenty of opportunities to relax, with enjoying long holidays and school trips, travelling with their peers. In other words, they can do whatever they wish thanks to their parents’ money. Moreover, teenagers often live with their parents and siblings, in addition to be surrounded by a wide cluster of friends, which means they have enough supporters if they get into trouble. They are also free of domestic and financial responsibilities that adults have to meet. Simply put, teens experience a carefree stage of life in this period.
Nevertheless, in my view, adults are much happier than teenagers, even though they do not express this. Adults, as grown personalities, are more mentally mature and know what the true sense of happiness looks like, and thus value whatever they have. On the other hand, teenagers, with a lack of experience and maturity, fail to appreciate their valuable opportunities. Furthermore, although adults have to deal with various obligations, such as paying bills and taxes, their feelings of satisfaction and fulfillment, which come from their career, marriage and children, can easily cancel the duties out. Therefore, even though adulthood is often considered a challenging period, it usually allows people to feel truly happy.
In summary, each stage of life has its pros and cons. That being said, people are more likely to experience the genuine sense of happiness once they reach adulthood.
